The Katherine Ferruzzo Legacy Foundation Announces Dedication of Huddle Room at The University of Texas College of Education
The Katherine Ferruzzo Legacy Foundation is honored to share that The Katherine Frances Ferruzzo Huddle Room was officially dedicated on Friday, April 17, 2026, at The University of Texas College of Education.
Located within The Sánchez Building, this new Huddle Room is designed as a collaborative space for students preparing to become educators, making it a fitting tribute to Katherine’s passion for special education and her commitment to supporting both students and teachers. The dedication ceremony brought together leadership from the College of Education, including Charles Martinez, the Dean of the College of Education, Nathan Clemens, the Chair of the Department of Special Education, and Richard Hogeda, the Assistant Dean for Student Affairs for the College of Education, along with faculty, staff, family, and friends.
This honor was bestowed posthumously following Katherine’s passing in the summer of 2025. At that time, she was a recent graduate of Memorial High School in Houston, Texas and was to attend The University of Texas at Austin as a Special Education major. She had already spent two years working directly with students with autism through the APPLE program at Frostwood Elementary in Houston’s Spring Branch ISD as part of the Future Teachers Program, and planned to ultimately return to become a special education teacher after graduation.
“Katherine was so excited to be a Longhorn and to study special education at The University of Texas,” said Andrea Ferruzzo, Katherine’s mother and the Foundation’s Founder. “Her commitment to this path was clear well before college. She didn’t just aspire to make a difference, she was already doing the work. Seeing her friends there to celebrate her, in a place that meant so much to her made this incredibly special. She would be so honored to know she now has a permanent place there.”
The dedication of the Katherine Frances Ferruzzo Huddle Room represents a meaningful step in extending Katherine’s legacy within the field of education. Through continued partnerships and community support, the Katherine Ferruzzo Legacy Foundation remains committed to advancing opportunities for special education students and the educators who serve them.
