At 2 years old, the future Camp Mystic counselor was diagnosed with developmental delays and began attending a school for children with special needs. She quickly caught up with her typically developing peers, but her parents kept her at the school through the end of the year. Many of those classmates became lifelong friends.
Before she died at 19 in the Texas Hill Country floodwaters on July 4, Katherine was already planning a career as a special education teacher. Now, her mother, Andrea Ferruzzo, hopes to carry on her daughter’s passion with the Katherine Ferruzzo Legacy Foundation. In less than six months, the foundation has raised more than $1 million to support special education teachers in their classrooms.
